Craft Furniture Room – The Heart of the House

We love to gather with friends and family to enjoy a great meal, conversation and of course, shared interests. Now that Jess and Peter have their own home, they can really enjoy having friends over to do just that. Now one thing you may not know is Jess and Peter have some great interests other than work! Peter does pottery, dioramas, sewing, and loves to craft. Jess is a diehard scrapbooking fan and has the supplies to prove it. I loved learning about her “Girl Friend” weekends, laughing and enjoying great times scrapbooking her memories and her photos. What a great legacy to build on now!
Jess and Peter have decided to turn an extra bedroom into a wonderful craft room, and I must say I am so jealous. I have only gotten to create one other craft room, and it was the best room in the house. Move over great kitchen; a well set up craft room wins hands down any day! It is not only a great place to gather, but when it is set up and organized and all the special supplies of your crafts are in place, you have the best of both worlds.
A great place to start is with a well organized cabinet. Hooker Furniture has a great craft cabinet, complete with doors, drawers, and storage galore. There are special places for various sizes of paper, drawers to hold stamps, scissors, specialty punches, and plenty of space to work while you create your next master piece. The hutch component is perfect for anyone who has longed for a present wrapping station with all the wrapping paper organized and easy to use. The doors are a great blessing; when you have a work in progress, you simply close the doors, and the project is safe and hidden. Along with the cabinet, shelving is a must to keep both Jess and Peter’s projects safe and out of the way. Look to outfit a closet or install open shelving along the walls. Keep the shelves narrow, about 12 inches. Even though adjustable shelving is not always the most attractive, paint it to match the wall, and it will just disappear like magic. The adjustable shelving will allow you to have the flexibility to hold a variety of projects that are all different sizes.
But most important is the work table. Think about how you like to work. Do you stand a lot or sit? Do you like a big comfy chair or a bar stool? A drop leaf table offers a lot of flexibility- if you do not need the full length, you can fold it down for ample floor space. When the friends come a-calling and you want everyone to work together, just flip up the side and pull up a chair.
Another important component of a great craft room that can be overlooked is lighting. An overhead light will be great for most projects, but also think about a table lamp that clamps onto the table. This will allow you to direct the light to where the project requires. It's also very easy to stash in the closet when not in use. Track lighting is also another way to light all the space underneath your main crafting area if it happens to be a larger space. Peter and Jess may need to consider track lighting since their crafting space is mainly in a U-shape around the room away from the overhead light.
You are all set, the table is out, the paper is ready, and the pictures are pulled for the project. All you need are a few snacks and the friends to make this a truly fun weekend.
