Now that Thanksgiving and autumn are over, it’s time to pull out the Christmas decorations. I absolutely love decorating for the holidays, especially in my new home. Since I had very few of the holiday decorating staples, I had to go shopping.  I needed lighted garland for the staircase and mantle, candle lights for the windows, and outdoor Christmas lights for the bushes. It was important that I had all of these items prior to beginning my decorating escapade.

When it comes to holiday decorations, saving money is key. I wanted to save our money for spending on our family’s gifts, so I decided to bargain hunt for the decorations. Coupons are very important this time of year. A great way to find deals on holiday décor is to sign up for the Michaels email list. They are a great craft store when it comes to basic plain garland, wreaths, and ornaments. Rather than spending a great deal of money on the garland, I received an email from Michaels with a 40% off your entire purchase coupon. I combined the coupon with their Black Friday sale and paid less than half-price for everything.

Instead of buying garland that was already decorated with pine cones, bows, ribbons, and sparkles, I just got the plain lighted garland and decorated it myself. It’s easy to find small bows and Christmas ribbon to wrap around your garland for a very great price. It can save you a lot of money in the long-run. I chose to purchase some holiday ribbon to wrap around my garland for both the staircase in my home and over our mantle. It was a really nice touch to choose my own ribbon that matched my living room colors. It ended up looking customized that way.

For our outdoor lights on the bushes, we were very lucky to find boxes of unopened lights in our attic! It appeared the previous owner had left them there for us, so it was a very nice surprise. If you are in need of new outdoor lights, I do recommend just buying the LED lights. Although they may be a bit more expensive, in the long run they are worth it. They use less energy and they don’t blow out like the old white lights. Haven’t we all had one light die and it blew out the entire strand? So frustrating, so avoid that headache and just buy the energy efficient LED lights.

For the candle lights that I placed in my windows, I chose to go to Walmart because I was able to find a box of 2 for $3. This was a great deal because I had 10 windows to place candle lights in. Interesting fact: although many windows may not be near an outlet, choosing to use a battery-powered candle light instead is not the solution. The battery-powered ones aren’t nearly as bright as the plug-in ones. Don’t waste your money—just buy extension cords instead!

It was so much fun to hang up the garland and decorate it all myself. I just love decking the halls for the holidays! Be sure to check out the photos. How do you decorate for the holidays? Tell us here!
