Fixing Up Our First Home

After living in a small-sized apartment for 2 years, my husband and I are ready for more space.  After a few months of searching, we finally found the perfect house for our current and future needs.  It was important for us to find a place we would be happy in 10 years down the road with our future children.  For now, that extra space will lead to some fun rooms that we can use creatively for crafting and gaming, two of our mutual interests.

Although the house is in fairly good condition, there are a few minor easy repairs that need to be done before we move in.  Knowing our busy schedule, we won’t get a chance to fix these issues later, so we are trying to get them all done in the next two weeks.  First, my lovely husband Peter got up on the roof and covered up all the nail heads left exposed.  We both have also spent some time on the siding of the house filling in some minor holes and cracks in the masonite siding with clear caulk.  This type of siding can expand and rot if exposed to water.  Our third project will be to repair some of the dog-chewed trim in the house, repaint the trim, and install shoe board at the juncture of the walls & floor.  The last owner put in the flooring themselves and forgot to properly fill in the small gaps between the base and wall.

The real fun will begin next week when we are done with these fix ups.  Our interior designer, Laura Redd, will work with us to create a house plan allowing us to design one room of the house at a time as our budget allows.  She will help us determine how much of our apartment furniture will work in the new house, assist in furniture & paint selection, and generally offer creative advice.  Our first room will be the kitchen – where it all happens for us!
