Fixing Up Our New Kitchen

Our new kitchen has beautiful cabinets and an interesting counter in colors that we love.  However, the wall color is just not quite right.  Although I love orange for kitchens, we are going to repaint with a terra cotta color instead of the brighter orange.  This will pull out some of the colors in the counter.

Our kitchen also needed some minor fixing.  There is some crown molding missing over the cabinets above the sink.  Thankfully, the old owners left a spare piece in the garage for us!  We also need to re-shim the area between the counter & the sink and the island counter.  These areas are not properly secured, and the kitchen sink looked slightly below level in comparison to the counter.  The bar counter over the stove also needs to be secured with corner braces.  It is slightly wobbly, and our friends will definitely lean on the counter at parties while we cook up a storm.  Our bar chairs look a bit out of place in this area, and Laura will provide us with some advice on what type of bar stool will look best in this area of the kitchen.

Our next big task is the stove.  We are thrilled to find that the house came with a very fancy Jenn-Air stove.  The glass top has been cracked, so we searched the Internet for a replacement top.  We also picked up a meat probe (our stove shuts off when it reaches a certain temperature!) and dehydrator attachment.  I’m pretty amazed that stoves come with these features considering the stove we had at our old apartment with its annoyingly uneven burners.

The biggest work for us in the kitchen will actually be selecting a refrigerator.  I thought a French door bottom freezer would work best with our space requirements.  The rest of the appliances are stainless steel with black accents, so we have opted to match this finish throughout the room.  There are tons of options to choose from within our price range with these features, so it is mainly left up to brand.  After scouring customer review sites, I’m not really feeling confident about any brand out there!  In order to prevent future problems, I am going to forgo an ice & water dispenser on the outside of the fridge, as this is the part that breaks the most frequently that I can tell from online reviews.  I’m also going to buy from a local appliance store that guarantees their refrigerators and installation instead of a big box store.  I like supporting local businesses, and I feel more confident that they will service the product properly if any issues arise.
