About a year and a half ago, I purchased my first home in Martinsville, VA; located in an older, traditional neighborhood and about a mile from Lake Lanier.  At the top of my list for renovation was the kitchen.  It was outdated and in poor condition.  The wallpaper, appliances, flooring, cabinets, and light fixtures all needed to be updated. I took a long-term approach and planned a design that was aesthetically pleasing, sensible for how I live, and fully functional, given my love for cooking.

It was very exciting to design my own kitchen, and see it transform from an idea that existed in my imagination to a beautiful room. I tried to create what I have always wanted in a kitchen, of course within the constraints of a budget and the existing room structure.  We demolished the room down to its studs, so I had the luxury of creating my new kitchen from scratch.  There were a lot of choices to be made, from choosing my contractor to selecting paint colors, cabinetry, countertops, lighting and flooring.  My mindset was based on a more long term approach, as I felt it was important to plan a design that was sensible for how I live and to make certain that the look wouldn’t get dated any time soon.  Being that I live in a traditional town, I knew the importance of taking a more classic approach to its design, rather than extremely contemporary and trendy; but I’m 24 years old, so still wanted some hip characteristics and style to be incorporated into the room.  I wanted my kitchen to look modern and sophisticated and feel comfortable and inviting at the same time.  Most importantly, for resale purposes, I knew I had to create a timeless appeal, and one that would charm a wide array of personalities and ages.  By choosing modern dining room furniture, I was able to keep my personal style while retaining the resale value of my house.
