Organizing at Home with Baskets

January 27, 2012 - 8:27am
Better organization was my biggest New Year’s resolution for 2012. I decided to choose one simple way to organize and it was inspired by a photo that was posted on the Hooker Furniture Facebook page. I chose to organize with baskets.
Baskets are a great way to create a designated place for things that don’t necessarily have a place already. For instance, bills and dog toys. Both of which were always spewed everywhere in our kitchen. The other reason I chose to use baskets as my organization tool was because they are inexpensive, attractive, and have a natural, organic vibe. There all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colors, so working with baskets can be endless. As usual, the first place I went to browse for baskets was a Michael’s Arts & Crafts store. If you’ve read my previous articles, you’ll gather that I’m a big advocate for Michael’s. Mainly, because they have great coupons available and always seem to have what I need—even things I didn’t think I needed!
My main goal was to organize in an attractive and trendy way. I chose an inexpensive, low basket with handles to hold the dog toys for Maddie. It was practical because it was low enough for my dog to reach into and attractive, so it didn’t need to be hidden from plain sight. For organizing our bills, I chose a simple rectangular basket that appears a bit modern. It’s a nice, dark chocolate brown color and goes well in our kitchen.
Those are two easy ways to use baskets for organization. But have you thought about using them in your bathroom? I have a basket sitting on the counter in our bathroom that holds all of my essential toiletries like glasses, contact case, and contact solution. I even have a divider inside the basket to create 4 compartments to hold my items. In the guest bathroom I have a basket sitting on the counter that holds guest hand towels. It’s an attractive way to house everyday items.
Another great way to use baskets in the bathroom is to nail them onto the wall to hold rolled up bath towels. See my photo for inspiration. It can be more fun to use baskets for this purpose rather than a traditional towel rack. This idea can be very practical for a guest bathroom. It’s a way to store their towels for easy reach. Just have the baskets nailed to the wall nearest the shower.
There are countless ways to use baskets throughout the home. Share some ways you use baskets in your home here!
