As you may know from our previous posts regarding our home office, this area of the house has been turned into an area reminiscent of our honeymoon.  A giant oil painting, a detailed water color, and a carved mirror grace the walls, brightening up our work space with the memories of our happiest vacation.  However, there was one wall left blank.  We just didn’t have any other art that would fit the wall & fit in with the theme.

As a Christmas present to ourselves, we decided to commission a painting from our friend Katie Wall.  To fit the space in our office, I picked out one of my favorite photos from our honeymoon.  Called the “Fruit of the Gods” by the Balinese people, the spicy & sweet fruit pictured on the branch above grows in temples across Bali.  I really liked the composition of the photo, so I thought it would make a pretty interesting painting.

As you can see the differences between the photo & the painting, the composition of the picture has changed slightly to a vertical inset instead of the full photo.  I think this makes a better focus on the fruit itself, the star of the painting.  In addition, the overall bright green has changed slightly to a more yellow overtone, which is set off perfectly by our mustard walls.  The dark wood frame also reminds me of all the intricate carvings the island is so famous for.

Now I don’t have to worry about going all the way back to Bali just to fill up some space on our wall!  Our home office really has that personalized touch now.  If you are missing that special piece of art for your home, consider talking to a local artist about a commissioned piece.  It might surprise you how affordable it can be, and it is really amazing to see our photograph translated into an amazing oil painting.
