Protecting our Bamboo Floors from Office Furniture for the Home

Now that the most vital part of the house is finished, our next step is our home office area. Our last apartment had our desks overflowing with papers in our dining area. Since we are fortunate enough to be able to work from home upon occasion, our goal with the home office in our new space is to create a more work-focused area that still feels homey.
Our house came pre-wired for ethernet and cable, which makes our lives much easier. Our desk positioning has to be conscious of outlets and connections while still providing a natural feeling flow. We also have to be conscious of the floors in the new house—very nice bamboo with a dark stain. As we discovered moving, they can be sensitive to scratching. Our first order of business for the office before we could set anything up was finding a rug to fit in our space to protect the floor from our rolling chairs.
As we discovered, finding a rug for a 11’4” by 11’9” space is nearly impossible at any big box store. We tried Lowe’s & Home Depot for rugs, but the dimensions were never quite right. I was also concerned about durability since our chairs get a lot of use. Laura recommended going to a rug store with remnants—large pieces of rugs leftover from carpeting a house or discontinued pieces. We found a perfect rug that was almost exactly the right size and already surged. As a bonus, the rug is made out of wool, which means it is environmentally friendly and very durable. I will definitely return to Carpet One by Henry to peruse their remnants in the future since they have such a large selection. Note: If you are buying a remnant, keep in mind that you will probably need to have it sealed or surged in addition to buying a rug pad.
The rug is a perfect accent to set off a fun project for our built in bookcase. Laura Redd will detail the process of personalizing our bookcase in the next post.
